In the 1989 Tamil language film Apoorva Sagodharargal (Appu Raja), Appu (Kamal Haasan) kills Francis Anbarasu (Delhi Ganesh) using a Rube Goldberg machine. A Rube Goldberg machine or device is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg.

The award is Reuben Award awarded by National Cartoonists Society to the Cartoonist of the Year is named after Rube Goldberg, the founding member and the first president of the organization.
