Q) In the November 1911 domestic qualifying trials for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Shizo Kanakuri had set a marathon world record for 25 mile distance at 2 hours, 32 minutes and 45 seconds. He was thus selected as one of the only two athletes that Japan could afford to send to the Olympic event. But at 1912 Olympic Marathon he took 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds to complete the marathon- the slowest and longest marathon time in history, remarking, "It was a long trip. Along the way, I got married, had six children and 10 grandchildren." Why he took so much time ?
Ans: During that marathon due to heat and weakness he lost consciousness and did not complete the race and went home without telling any officials. So his official status with Olympics remained DNF (Did not Finish) and missing until 1967 when Swedish Olympic Committee invited him back to finish the marathon for the 55th anniversary of Stockholm Games.
